Horses working for horses…
Hooves was formed to support and co-ordinate the rehabilitation and rehousing of horses, donkeys and mules in the Klein Karoo, Western Cape. Those who may have been neglected, left behind, forgotten, mistreated or simply unable to be cared for by their owners.
Not all of these horses come from homes where they were not loved. In fact, a large percentage of horses are victims of drought in someparts of our country. Their families are suffering, livelihoods are being threatened and these equines are simply victims passed on by regretful owners. Others come from homes where their owners were simply not educated appropriately in the care or management of horses, mules and donkeys. Sadly, some do come from backgrounds of complete neglect, abandonment and careless breeding programs.
Operating in the Klein Karoo, Western Cape, South Africa we reach over 150 working horses, donkeys and mules excluding those in our Equine Sanctuary based on a portion of the farm “Voorbedacht” 34km’s from Oudshoorn.
With your support, we can continue to make a positive difference in the lives of horses, donkeys, mules and the people who depend on them.

Get involved
There are so many ways you can get involved to support us!
Hooves simply couldn’t function and carry out its objectives without the amazing support we receive. We are grateful that such a huge number of generous, compassionate and loyal supporters help us in so many different ways.
Of course we have those who donate to our cause in the form of financial donations and those vital funds pay for the daily care of our animals and help us rescue even more in need. However, we also have supporters who contribute in non-financial way which we are able to turn into financial donations or even financial savings.
Below we outline ways you can help us to continue our work and enable us to keep saving lives. We are currently feeding approximately 200 horses and donkeys including the rescues at Saint Helena Farm, Calitzdorp. Mostly donkeys effected by the severe and current drought.

Welfare & Fostering
It is difficult for many to believe that cruelty, neglect and abandonment still exists to such an extent in these modern times; however the need for equine welfare organisations such as HOOVES is ever-growing. Our site in Calitzdorp has an experienced team who can investigate welfare concerns and we work with local authority inspectors and the South African Police to address serious cases that may lead to legal action.
